The village, founded in 1850 on the Niagara River, was named after the Chippewa Indian band. It became part of the City of Niagara Falls by amalgamation in 1968. The area is well known for The Battle of Chippawa, fought on July 5th 1814. It was the longest and bloodiest military operation of the War of 1812.
