Photo Credits: © Judith Friswell. Dated: Summer 1987 Location: Surge tank and power plant at the SaskPower facility at Wellington, north of Lake Athabasca in Saskatchewan. The Wellington Plant is located approximately 25 kms west of Uranium City. Tower/Tank Information (10-07) Built: Around 1921. The circular building conceals the tank itself which is of vertical cedar plank construction banded by round steel bar hoops, and dates from the original construction, at which time the power generated was used to supply various mining operations in that area. Power plant takes water from White Lake through an unlined rock tunnel. There is a bifurcation downstream of the tank into to steel penstocks with butterfly valves at the inlet of each turbine. Total head is about 26 metres. Area Information: The three Athabasca power plants in the area, Wellington, Waterloo and Charlot River, formerly owned by Eldorado Nuclear, were mothballed after the closure of the uranium mine at Uranium City. SaskPower acquired the properties in the mid 1980s. Wellington is the oldest plant, circa 1929 with two horizontal turbines producing a total of 5 megawatts. |
