When the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) inside a house, there is a good chance that water supply lines will freeze. When water freezes it expands 9% and pipes can crack or burst. It is my understanding that many realtors and homeowners use RV antifreeze to winterize their cottage or home while away on holidays. It is important that that you create that live-in look with the help of timers, neighbors and/or friends. I will briefly address the following:
- RV Antifreeze.
- Giving your home or cottage that "live-in look" when you are gone.

RV ANTIFREEZE FOR WINTERIZING YOUR HOME OR COTTAGE
You do not have to add antifreeze to
anything that has been completely drained. Example: Washing machine hoses can be disconnected and completely drained, no need to add antifreeze. However, the motor still contains water so you add antifreeze to the drain of the washer. For more info click on links below.
RV ANTIFREEZE (propylene glycol)
This product is non-toxic and non-flammable. Unlike ethanol based products, propylene glycol is a lubricant and will actually work to extend the life of the seals in your faucets and toilets. RV antifreeze with a propylene solution of 35% will protect pipes from freezing to -50 degrees Fahrenheit (-45 degrees Celsius). Because full strength is not warranted, RV antifreeze comes diluted with up to 65% water. Unlike other antifreeze products it not harmful to septic beds.
WARNING:
NEVER use automobile antifreeze. It is extremely toxic. It can cause blindness and kidney damage if even minute quantities are ingested. Inhaled fumes can cause, among other things, upper-respiratory irritation. |
PROVIDE THAT LIVE-IN LOOK WHILE AWAY FROM YOUR HOME
Have a neighbor keep an eye on your home for any strange activity. Mail and flyers should be removed. This person can also give the house that 'live-in' look by shoveling the driveway or leaving tire tracks and footprints in freshly fallen snow. Ask a neighbor to park one of their cars in your driveway. Have a few lights on timers.
