Oakville’s first post office was built in 1835 and William Chisholm served as the first postmaster. The building originally stood on the southwest corner of Colborne (Lakeshore Road) and Navy Street. The building was moved to Lakeside Park in 1952 where it became Oakville’s first museum.
In 1827, Colonel William Chisholm purchased land at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek on Lake Ontario, later developing a shipbuilding yard and harbour in the area. The lake shore also played an important role in Oakville’s Black History, as the entry-point for many American slaves travelling the Underground Railroad in search of freedom. Compilation
