Area information. Elora is famous for the spectacular Elora Gorge and its 80 foot limestone cliffs descending into the Grand and Irvine Rivers. Originally called Irvine Settlement, the village was renamed Elora when the post office was established in 1839. Capt. Gilkison named the community after his brother’s ship, which was itself inspired by the Ellora Caves in India. Elora was settled by mainly Scottish pioneers who left their mark on finely crafted limestone houses, many of which remain today.
Group of Seven A. J. Casson quote: “I fell in love with Elora at first sight . . . Elora was unlike any other
Ontario town I know . . .
I became obsessed with sketching it.” (quoted in Anon . 1998a) Elora Info
