Area Information
Location: Chalk River is located along Highway 17 approximately 21 km northwest of Petawawa, and 182 km northwest of Ottawa. Chalk River was a separate municipality until January 1, 2000, when the United Townships of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay and the Village of Chalk River were merged. This town was settled in the mid-1800s, and in 1875 was named for the river that joined the Ottawa River at that point. A railway, lumber, pulp & paper town, now dependent on farming and the Chalk River Laboratories.
Canada’s workhorse nuclear research reactor, the NRU at Chalk River, is to be closed in 2018 after a 60-year run of pioneering scientific innovation and, more recently, serious age-related breakdowns, security concerns, and political controversy.
