Area Information
Location:
Birch Island is located on Manitoulin Island. Rainbow Country is a local services board in the province of Ontario. It encompasses and provides services to the communities of Whitefish Falls and Willisville in the Sudbury District and Birch Island and McGregor Bay in the Manitoulin.
The area was the source of much inspiration to the famous Group of Seven painters in the early 1900s. A plaque at Birch Island celebrates the visit of US president Franklin Delanor Roosevelt, who spent 13 days fishing here prior to the Quebec conference of 1943.
The road from Espanola was built southward in stages and reached Birch Island about 1925.
