Area Information
Location:
Almonte is a scenic mill town on the Canadian Mississippi River, about 40 minutes southwest of downtown Ottawa.
- The municipality now known as the Town of Almonte was originally called Shepherd’s Falls because Mr. Shepherd received from the Crown the tract on which the town now stands.
In a region where the early settlers’ Irish and Scottish origins are prominent in the names of the communities they founded — Lanark, Corkery, Glen Isle, Scotch Corners, Tatlock and the like — it seems more than a little odd that our town should be named for a now-forgotten Mexican general.
