The town is located in the northeastern corner of Nova Scotia. It is approximately 160 kilometres northeast of Halifax. Antigonish is home of St Francis Xavier University which has a strong reputation across Canada and internationally.
- Today, many residents have strong ties to Scotland and the Town has been home to the famous Antigonish Highland Games since 1863, and are the oldest continuous Highland games outside Scotland.
- Descendants of early settlers still reside in the Town of Antigonish and surrounding areas today. A few of the more common and oldest surnames in the area include MacDonald, MacIsaac, MacPherson, MacDougall, MacGillivray, Chisholm, Fraser, Campbell, Stewart, and Gillis.
