Area Information
- Location:
Caraquet is a town in Gloucester County. Situated on the shore of Chaleur Bay in the Acadian Peninsula, its name is derived from the Mi'kmaq term for meeting of two rivers. The Caraquet River and Rivière du Nord flow into the Caraquet Bay west of the town.
- The Robin family, originally from Jersey, set up fish processing plants in the town in 1837, creating a significant economic boom that led to the establishment of sawmills and other industries, including cooperages, a tannery and a tinsmith’s. Then, with the arrival of the railroad in 1887, Caraquet became truly connected with the outside world. Text and standpipe info credit: Ville de Caraquet
