Because of the change in route of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1881, the entire town, originally known as Manitoba City, was moved to a new site and renamed Manitou.
Manitou is surrounded by Mennonite communities and is right next to the St. Leon Wind Farm, the largest wind farm in Manitoba and one of the largest in Canada.
