Ponoka, founded in 1905, is located at the junction of Highway 2A and Highway 53, approximately 50 km. north of the city of Red Deer and about 100 km south of Edmonton, Alberta. The name Ponoka is Cree for "Black Elk".

Ponoka was and is still home to the large Provincial Mental Hospital. The hospital was built in 1911 and was completely self-sufficient. That included a watertower on the main grounds as well as one at the farm site.
