About this tower. The surge tower is designed to reduce the damage to piping in the high lift pumping station at the water treatment plant in the event of a power failure when the water would 'surge' backward if the pumps stopped. The water plant produces about 300,000 m3/day so at any given time, this empty storage facilitiy is available to accept a large sudden inrush of water and then releases it back into the water plant underground storage tanks after the cycles of pressurization and vacuum have dissipated.
The tower is 36 m tall. (Above ground) and 42 m total (above and below ground)
It was installed in 1992-1993
