Memory: The Union Pacific Coal Company opened the first underground mine in 1881 after construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad from Granger to Oregon.
In 1980 the Kemmerer Coal Co. was sold to the Pittsburg & Midway Coal Company, now a subsidiary of the Chevron Corporation. The pit remains in operation with an annual output of about 5 million tons.

"Green River Formation" Fossils
Head to the Kemmerer area (pronounced “Kemmer”) in southwest Wyoming to discover fossils on your own at one of the area's private quarries that serve as 52-million-year-old limestone graveyards. At these private facilities, visitors can dig through layers of time, uncovering fish, plants, birds, insects and crocodiles. These affordable quarry digs provide a perfect souvenir. Fossils range from fossil fish, fossil plants, turtles, stingrays, birds and many forms of aquatic life.
There are an abundance of fossil fish in the “Green River Formation.” Most people find enough fish to satisfy their appetite in the first two hours.  It is our experience that the effort one puts into splitting the rock down into its smallest size is what will give you the greatest potential to finding numerous quantities of fossil fish!
NOTE: Summer 2017 I spent four hours splitting stones at Fossil Safari and ended up with about a dozen large and small fish fossils. I highly recommend this private quarry and hope to go there again but then for a much longer stay.
