Area Information
History: Initially called Fort Schlosser and renamed the Town of Niagara in 1812, the local history of the town generally reflects the history of the Niagara Frontier which is replete with settlements by Indians, Europeans, and determined pioneers. For more than a century since its birth the Town of Niagara was mainly a farming community with much of the local activity centered around the Military Road area.
The Town of Niagara is the neighbor to the City of Niagara Falls, which is next to the famed Niagara Falls. The town is located in the southwest corner of the county. Since the late 20th century, it has been known for its factory-outlet mall (formerly Prime Outlet Niagara Falls), and is frequently visited by nearby Canadians based on the favorable currency exchange. Also located within the town is Niagara Falls International Airport, which serves the Niagara County area.
Before Europeans entered the area, it was dominated by the Neutral Nation of Native Americans. European migration into the area began in the 17th century. The first recorded European to visit the area was Frenchman Robert de la Salle, accompanied by Belgian priest Louis Hennepin, who was the first known European to see the falls. The influx of newcomers may have been a catalyst for already hostile native tribes to turn to open warfare in competition for the fur trade.
The City of Niagara Falls was incorporated on March 17, 1892 from the villages of Manchester and Suspension Bridge, which were parts of the Town of Niagara.
