Area Information
Barre Centre is a hamlet in the town of Barre in Orleans County, New York, United States.
The first settlement in the town was commenced by William McAllister in 1811. He located on the site of the Phipps Union Female Seminary and erected a log house, the first in the village and In the town also. Mrs. McAllister died soon after, and was at the time the only white woman in the town.

The first church organized in the town was the Presbyterian, at Albion, in 1824. Their first house of worship was erected in 1830, their present house in 1846

The manufacturing of Albion is limited to a fiouring mill, a saw mill, a foundry and manufactory of agricultural implements, and the usual mechanic shops.


The Town of Barre was founded in 1818 from part of the Town of Gaines. The town was named after the birthplace of an early settler.

The Benjamin Franklin Gates House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
