THE TANK IS ALWAYS FULL!
It is an erroneous idea that the tank needs to be pumped when it is full. However, solids will gradually fill the tank thereby preventing the effluent from reaching the septic bed. To prevent this from happening the tank should be pumped regularly.
A properly cared-for system can last for decades and possibly a lifetime.
Distances
required between the well, septic tank and septic bed may be not the same in every municipality. Always check first with the local authorities.
Permits
Permits are required for all new installations.

Septic tank. Holding tank. Septic beds. Tile beds. Leaching beds. Disposal fields. Absorption fields.

A septic system consists of two major components, a septic tank and a septic bed.
The tank is a watertight container usually made of concrete. It serves as a holding tank to allow solids which will not desolve, to settle near the bottom of the tank. The solids are known as
SLUDGE and the lighter materials as
SCUM.
Within the tank some of the solids are decomposed and converted to a liquid.
This liquid, known as
EFFLUENT, is discharged from the tank into the septic bed. Septic beds are also known as tile beds, leaching beds, disposal fields and absorption fields. The septic bed consists of a network of perforated or open joined pipes in trenches below the ground surface which allows the effluent to permeate into the soil.
INSPECTION.
The septic tank should be inspected annually and cleaned every 3-5 years.
