Benefits of a pondless water feature kit
- No water hazard. Ideal for families with small children. Too many accidents happen every year involving children falling into ponds.
- Save
on energy. Unlike a regular pond, the waterfall can be turned off when you are not home.
- Kits are designed by professionals keeping in mind the needs and skills of the Do It Yourself type of homeowner.
- All required components in one box which is cheaper than buying all parts separately. All that you have to do is simply add rocks, pebbles and water.!
- Easy to install. Pump and filters are properly sized.
- A lot less maintenance and upkeep compared to a regular backyard pond.
- The sight and sound of running or falling water is very relaxing and soothing. You don't need a pond to create a waterfall or fountain.
- Except for the smaller self-contained water features (top picture), you can design your own waterfall/pebble stone river layout (lower picture). The possibilities are countless and are only limited by the scope of your imagination.

Yes, it is possible to enjoy the soothing sounds of falling water without having to worry about maintaining a pond, for the simple reason that there is no pond. These pondless waterfall or fountain features have no visible water in their catch basin. The water descends down rocks to fall into a gravel basin and seemingly disappears. The water filters between the pebbles, is filtered and pumped again to the top. A few plants may be added to this feature so that it does not appear to be just a pile of rocks. These pondless waterfalls are ideal for people who have limited space or for families with small children. A pondless waterfall or fountain will give parents piece of mind because as the name already suggest, these garden features do not have an actual pond. Pondless waterfall kits and pondless fountain kits can be bought on-line or at your local garden centre. There is a great variety of models available, from elaborate waterfall systems with water cascading down a rock formation and pebbled rivers to a single column or rock with water oozing out the top. Some of the smaller models are portable and can be placed just about anyplace where there is a power outlet. The pondless two column waterfall shown to the right has a below grade basin, containing the filter and circulating pump. A 30 cm. (12 inch) deep hole had to be dug for the installation.
Pondless waterfall kits and pondless fountain kits contain all the necessary parts, including filter and circulation pump. They are easy to install and can be up and running in a short time. After the installation is completed, spruce up the area with some plants and scrubs.
TIPS
1- Make sure to install a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet near the waterfalls. The receptacle should be located close enough to accommodate a pump with a 1.8 m (6 feet) long electrical cord. Most pump cords however, are much longer.
2- Install an exterior on/off switch so power can be turned off temporarily when you are working around the pond. It is not a good idea to put your hands in the water for let's say, cleaning the water intake on your pump. I know, you installed a GFCI outlet to prevent deadly mishaps but be smart and turn off the power because water, or wet conditions, and electricity are a bad mix. |
