Picnic Tables. Picnic table plans. Pre-cut picnic table kits

WARNING
Some lightweight picnic tables have the potential danger of tipping due to faulty design or the use of light undersized materials. If there is a floor model on display check it out before buying. If in doubt, buy a table with separate benches.

Plastic (PVC) picnic tables
Blow molded plastic picnic tables are becoming more popular because they are lighter, stronger, and less expensive than wooden tables, and require no maintenance. They are also more durable than wooden tables, and last longer.

Children's picnic tables
These are undersized picnic tables. They are almost always constructed of plastic or wood, and are used for eating and playing.

TIP
Make sure to use galvanized bolts and screws. Regular hardware will rust and create unsightly stains.

Maintenance
- Tighten all nuts and screws when the picnic table seems to be getting loose.
- Reapply stain or sealer every 2-3 years or as needed.
- For winter storage stand picnic table on end and lean against a tree, the house or something else that is sturdy. That is how it is done in provincial and state parks. It will prevent a buildup of snow and ice which could lead to cracking, warping or rotting due to moisture.

A well maintained picnic table can last for years and so do the memories of having family picnics in the park or supper in the backyard. I made my first (and only) picnic table, from round cedar logs. To get the right dimensions I went to a nearby park. The picnic table was 3 m. (10 feet) long, seated up to twelve people (14 with a chair placed at each end) and survived more than 25 years of abuse. I made a "high chair" contraption that would slide over the seat. The chair's arm rests were secured to the table top with removable dowels. The neatest thing about this table was that it did not tip when all the people seated on one side would leave, see WARNING below.
Today the good old picnic table is still popular as ever before and yes, wood is still the preferred choice of material. There is a wide variety of picnic tables models available including:
- The standard one piece unit
- Table with separate benches
- Table that converts to two separate benches with a backrest that swivels up.
- Wood seats and table top attached to steel frame
Not only used for meals
Our kids spend hours and hours on and under the picnic table. It was used as a platform for building things, creating pieces of art, and building a make-shift fort or tent.

The two sets of leg frames are assembled and held together with carriage bolts, washers and nuts. The table-top and seat boards are attached to the leg frames with screws or nails. Screws are preferred over nails as it makes it a lot easier to replace a board if necessary.
Picnic table plans
There may be links on this page to get a free DIY picnic table plan. If not, many of the major home improvement centres have a supply of free plans for the aspiring woodworker. Just like with many other consumer products there is a wide variety of plans to choose from. Do your homework and choose a model that suits your style and needs, then get the materials and enjoy your weekend project.

Scratches on metal parts
If your picnic table has metal legs, nicks and scratches should be looked after promptly. When applying touch-up paint, please follow instructions and cautions on product labels. Begin by rubbing lightly with a fine steel wool to smooth the surface and improve paint adhesion. Apply thin coats of touch-up paint and allow ample drying time between coats. WARNING
If there is a model on display at your nearest building centre, sit down with four people on the same side. If the picnic table is properly designed it won't tip, which could be disastrous if the table would be loaded with food for your first family meal outside.
