TIP
Despite your best efforts to preserve the original colour of the wood, the effects of the sun's rays will give your wood garden and patio furniture a very attractive silver grey patina.

TIP
Tighten all nuts and screws when your patio furniture seems to be getting loose. Apply a lubricating oil such as WD 40 to all chair glides and swivels.

TIP
Where possible, store your furniture indoors or provide waterproof covers.

WARNING
Do NOT use hight water pressure cleaners as they will damage the wood cells.
Do NOT use steel wool to remove stains or other residue. The left behind steel particles of the steel wool will rust and discolour the wood.

Wooden patio furniture, when left untreated, can suffer through exposure to the elements. Teak is a an excellent choice of material for outdoor furniture. Teak contains natural inhibitors (oils) that resists fungal decay and the effects of water (it will not rot, swell or warp). It is also resistant to chemicals and acids.
Outdoor furniture plans
There are many places on the internet that sell, or provide at cost, outdoor furniture plans. It is possible to view and enjoy your backyard from your own 'homemade' patio or garden furniture. Plans are available for both, novice as well as skilled woodworkers.
Many manufacturers claim that their line of "all weather" wood patio and deck furniture is maintenance free. Well, you can maybe leave them all year outside but after a few seasons they will guaranteed have that "weathered" look. So, let's have a look at some of the things you can do to make your outdoor furniture looking good 'forever'

Redwood outdoor furniture needs an annual coat of redwood sealer
Maintenance
- Bird droppings are acidic and should be removed immediately to prevent lasting damage to your wood garden furniture.
- Cedar patio furniture should be protected from the elements by applying a good quality stain or wood sealer. Stains are deep penetrating sealers and are available in many colours. Wood sealers prevent dirt and moisture from penetrating the porous wood surface. Sealers and stains will not prevent the cedar from turning silver-grey over time. Painting or applying wood oil to cedar patio furniture is not recommended.
- Redwood outdoor furniture needs an annual coat of redwood sealer. Make sure to clean the furniture thoroughly before applying the sealer to all surfaces including the underside.
- Teak garden furniture should be cleaned and left to dry completely before applying an annual coat of teak oil. This can be a tricky job and you have to wipe off any excessive oil before it settles. Always follow the application directions as printed on the product's label.
