DISADVANTAGES
- Although there are many good reasons for choosing a solid surface kitchen countertop or solid surface bathroom vanity top there are also a few disadvantages that one has to bear in mind when selecting this type of kitchen counter top. If you want a natural looking surface then solid surface kitchen counter tops may not be the right option for you as they are often very uniform in color and pattern.
- Chance of cracking if items hotter than 400 degrees are placed on the counter . To prevent heat damage, always use a hot pad or trivet with rubber feet to protect your solid surface.
- Scratches show up white. Dark coloured solid surface countertops are not recommended for areas of heavy use, such as in kitchens unless cutting boards are used. |

Solid surface kitchen countertops and solid surface bathroom vanity tops are relatively new on the market but they are becoming increasingly popular in new home construction and remodeling and rightly so. Solid surface countertops have a non-porous, low-maintenance surface that does not harbor bacteria, and performs exceptionally well in high-use and/or constantly wet environments. Solid surface is available in hundreds of colors and visual textures, ranging from solid colors to patterns that mimic the appearance of stone or wood.
Unlike other countertop materials, solid surface can be joined invisibly by a trained craftsman. Solid surface is manufactured by mixing crushed stone, resins and pigments.
With and during a chemical cure the material is heated to 60°C or more.
Some manufacturers heat the material up to 300°F (150°C) so it can be shaped. If the newly shaped product is cooled quickly, it will improve the heat resistance. Typically the product is made in sheet form from which countertops are made. After the counter has been cut it is sanded on one or both sides.
Solid surface can also be cast into a variety of shapes, including sinks, shower bases and bathtubs.
Kitchen countertops and vanity tops are available in many colours and in a variety of finishes, ranging from matte to high-gloss.
THICKNESSES AVAILABLE
Solid surface is usually manufactured in three standard thicknesses 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" (6, 13 and 19 mm). The thinnest size is mainly used for shower and/or tub surrounds. It is too thin to be used for countertops. The 1/2" (13 mm) tops are strong enough for small to medium size kitchen countertops and solid bathroom vanity tops. The 3/4" (19 mm) thick top is ideal for large solid surface kitchen countertops and work islands.
COUNTER OR VANITY SUBSTRATE
Solid surface kitchen countertops and solid surface bathroom vanity tops expand and contract with temperature changes while a wood substrate will do the same with a change in humidity levels. Corian, a major manufacturer, advises against supporting the counters on wood and instead to install cross supports spaced approximately 20" (51 cm) apart.
This open support structure also allows excess heat to dissipate fast.
BRAND NAMES
Solid surface kitchen countertops and solid surface bathroom vanity tops are sold under various brand names including Avonite, Dupont Corian, Fountainhead, Gilbraltar, Nevamar, Silestone, Surell and Transolid.
The American Composites Manufacturing Association is starting to promote various "stoney" countertops under the name "MasterCast Engineered Composites" |

MAINTENANCE
Cleaning. Use a damp cloth, mild dish soap and water or an ammonia based spray cleaner to wipe down the counter. Tough stains may be removed by using a baking soda water solution or (after you have consulted your supplier) a mildly abrasive cleaner.
Most manufacturers recommend a matte or satin finish for ease of maintenance.
Scratches. Scratches in a solid surface kitchen countertop or solid surface bathroom vanity top can, in most cases, be repaired quickly by a trained technician. Scratches show up white. Dark coloured solid surface countertops are not recommended for areas of heavy use, such as in kitchens unless cutting boards are used. Because the surface is solid throughout, a countertop that has undergone years of wear and tear can be refinished.
Sealing. Unlike most other countertops, solid surface counters are non-porous and never need sealing. |
