Compressor

Exterior piping
Protect piping from physical damage. Replace worn insulation. The smaller line carries the liquid refrigerant back inside to the evaporator coil. The larger insulated line carries the refrigerant as a low pressure gas to the compressor. If the insulated pipe doesn't feel cold, call a service technician.

Central Air Conditioners. Compressor or Condenser.

Seasonal Start-up
Many compressors are equipped with a crankcase heater (also called sump heater). The heater is installed to prevent damage to the compressor and to assure trouble-free starting after the winter shut-down.
Power to the unit, in most cases, is controlled by a separate disconnect switch near the main electrical distribution panel. DO NOT run the air conditioning if the outdoor temperature is less than 16 degrees C (60 degrees F).

here are three important things to do before you turn the lever to 'cool'.
1. POWER TO THE COMPRESSOR HAS TO BE TURNED ON FOR 24 HOURS.
2. Close the damper in the humidifier duct.
3. Turn off the water supply to the humidifier or your air conditioner will be working overtime, which will inflate your electricity bill all summer long.

Fall Shut-down
The fall shut-down procedure is a reversal of the seasonable start-up.
1. Turn on the water supply to the humidifier.
2. Open the damper in the humidifier duct.
3. Turn off the power to the compressor, otherwise you will be paying for electricity to run the crankcase heater all winter long.
Thermostat Settings
The combined heating/cooling type is used in many homes.
Winter settings. Turn system to 'heat' and fan to 'auto'
Summer settings. Turn system to 'cool'
'auto' - Furnace blower and compressor will start when called for cooling.
'on' - Compressor will start when called for cooling. Furnace blower will run continually which will help in cooling the upper floors in a multi-level home.
Programmable thermostats. Set controls according to manufacturers instructions.
Furnace filters should be cleaned or replaced monthly to prevent costly repairs.

Compressor or condensing unit.
Keep the unit free from leaves, grass clippings, vines. bushes or anything else that will restrict the airflow.
DO NOT try to level the unit if it is slanted, to prevent pipe damage.
Call a service technician if:
- The unit is slanted more than 10 degrees.
- You see ice forming around the pipe connections
- The unit is running but not blowing warm air.
