It is safe to say that most homeowners never had a look in the attic. However, the attic should be checked annually because there may be conditions and situations that, if unnoticed, can lead to expensive roof repairs and uncomfortable living conditions below.
Tell-tale signs of attic trouble are:
- Water stains on ceiling.
- Water stains on rafters, trusses or around chimney.
- Rusty shingle nails.
- Frost on roof sheathing.
- Mildewed or delaminated plywood.
- Wet or damp insulation. |

- Debris from bird nests.
- Trouble cooling the upper floor.
In many cases the above conditions can be corrected by:
- Repairing or replacing the roofing.
- Adding more attic vents.
- Remove nesting material ( a very common problem).
- Preventing heat loss from living areas below.
