Heat loss.
Attic condensation can cause all kinds of trouble (mildew, wood rot). Condensation levels can be controlled by preventing warm moist air from entering the attic space.
This can be done by:
- Caulking around all ceiling penetrations (chimney, light fixtures, plumbing stacks, etc.)
- Upgrading the attic insulation.
- Installing an effective vapour barrier such as 6 mil. polyethylene. |

Vapour barrier. Many older homes (like the ones with plaster-on-wood lath construction), have no vapour barrier and installing one is not easy because the vapour barrier has to be installed on the heated side which means that all insulation has to be moved or removed. If the attic has been insulated with vermiculite it should not be moved at all.
Painting the ceiling with at least two coats of an oil based (Alkyd) paint or a single coat of latex vapour-barrier paint is an acceptable alternative. Ordinary latex paint NOT a suitable vapout barrier. |
